Barley Island
A dated post to be sure- but while attending my Grandfather's funeral we ran across a brewery in Noblesville , IN, named Barley Island. Mind you the entire clan had gathered for a 'tea party' and the males were in desperate need of reclaiming their masculinity.
So it was in search of a bit of refreshment that we found ourselves entering Barley Island. I should note that Indiana has not banned smoking in bars or breweries- so unfortunately I wasn't enjoying myself as much as I'd like.
While there they had several beers on tap and a cask conditioned ale- all delicious and well priced. Sampler cost was picked up by my Uncle but I believe it was around $7.50.
Belgium - Strong belgium (duhhh) characteristics- was as good as a beer overseas. Not much aroma (but was that due to the smoking? I don't know)- 1/6/6
IPA Cask Conditioned Ale- Great hops, some off taste due to the cask- good room temperature. A little while later as it sat out and I made my way through the rest of the beers I tasted it again- and it was even better! 2/8/8
The Brown Ale- They said they added more hops in this batch but (I felt) it was wasted. There also was not much malt character- 2/5/7
The Pale Ale- Great Hops, great floral and bittering- 2/8/9
Wheat- Once again, I'm not a wheat fan, but this was very good. Practically no aroma to speak of, 1/7/7
I'd recommend stopping in for a pint- I was sorely disappointed by the lack of stouts (new production coming online after losing a boiler) but I'll get that the next time I'm around Indy.

Don't judge a book by its cover. The exterior and the area just inside the door made me wonder if I had made a mistake....I made my way to the back and found the bar. Ahhhh. It was a little smokey and the music too loud (God, I feel old typing that) but the beer and the service were great. I had the IPA, Java Sout and the Wheat Ale. I had just driven from Cleveland and the IPA was my first--delicous. Java Stout is available only in bottles--it is really good. It tastes more like coffee than beer. I loved it! The Wheat Ale was a bit flat--I don't mean that in a bad way--although I was concerned when it didn't look like it had much fizz--it didn't but it was very good

Very friendly staff and patrons as well.. The beer was very good. Interesting options from the 6 or 7 on tap. I would come back here again. That is the true litmus test-- isn't it?

UNIQUE PLACE LOCATED NORTH OF INDY. ENJOYED THE JAVA STOUT, IPA AND WHEAT BEERS. BREWER SPENT SEVERAL MINUTES SHOWING ME THE BREWHOUSE AND ANSWERING SOME QUESTIONS. I WAS UNABLE TO DRINK THE GROWLER OF PALE ALE TO GO BECAUSE OF IT FALLING OUT OF THE VAN AND ONTO THE CONCRETE FLOOR IN MY GARAGE!

I'm really surprised to see any negative comments on this pub. I go in there often and have never had a bad experience. The beer is awesome with a great selection. The Blind Tiger Pale Ale is some of the best beer that I have ever drank and believe me I have consumed my share of beer. The food is reasonably priced and very tasty. I would go as far to say the best burger in town. As for the service I feel it is even better than the food and beer. The nicest bartenders in town with a great knowledge of the beer they are serving. If you don't have a good time at Barley Island Brewing Company it's because you don't know how. Go visit them and I think you will agree. If you sre a fan of good beer that is.

Very poor service. Large parties definitely get the attention. The owner/manager should train the wait staff to serve ALL patrons and not leave guests having to leave there own table looking for a server just to place an order. Overall this place is worthless.

I have been giving this place numerous second chances and Sunday was the last straw. The first time I went to the restaurant was about three years ago and at the time, they asked if we would only order a few items so they wouldn't have to do too much cleaning as it was a slow night. No problem except what we ordered was not what we got (vegetarian dish came complete with meat). Second time - we ordered dishes and they served us completely different dish for one person and the other two who ordered fish and chips had one completely burned and the other person's had the fish missing! When we finally managed to get the server (after waiting for 15 minutes for them to make eye contact with us), they didn't seem too concerned how our food turned out as they were unwilling to redo any of the dishes - but they did offer to knock $5.00 off the total bill. Third time - just ordered beer, one of which they refilled the beer using a dirty glass that had lipstick on it. Fourth time - Sunday night and I sat in the bar area, had to ask someone to use their menu after they were done and track down someone to take my order. I ordered two beers and appetizer and I was there for 2 hours waiting for my appetizer (thus the 2 beers). When my appetizer came - it omitted all the toppings the menu listed. On top of that the bartender was much more concerned about talking to the few people she knew then helping those of us hungry. One person at the table next to me had a bun on their burger that they did not ask for and was told that was their burgers were served. Nothing Else. Needless to say, I have not hear one good thing about this place, nor can I say one good thing. I will never go back nor recommend that place. Poorly managed.

Nice little drive north of Indy. Place was packed when I arrived and they were expecting a big crowd later that evening. Cask pale ale was very nice--a good session beer. Owner, brewer, and bartender were great; they treated me like a king and were big into my beer travels and beer talk in general. Nice, small town atmosphere, very relaxing place.

An O.K. place for beer. The bartender was really cool. He liked to talk and poured lots of samples. Sampled at least one of all six then drank a couple of pales. A little more refinement and hops and this place could rock.

Old building with lots of character; a former livery and garage. Hippie-ish flavor inside at the bar (tie dye shirts w. logo). Had 8 on tap, with the wit and the bourbon porter (cask) the best. The 60 shillinng was very mild but good also, with the pale being kind of weak.

This was pretty standard for what I think of as a brewpub nowadays. They had 9 beers on tap, of which I found 4 to be top-notch, and the remainder were so-so. Of note was a cask-conditioned scotch ale, which was unique to anything else that I've ever had. I had some of the blackened catfish, which my waitress said was caught locally, and tasted quite tender and fresh. My friend had an appetizer plate, which was mostly the same hot wing/cheesestick/nacho stuff that you can get anywhere.

The menu was basic pub grub with an occasional twist. The bangers and mash were very good, and the spinach club was excellent. The beer was decent, but not much to get excited about. If you're in the area, it's worth trying, but don't go too far out of your way to get there.
